THE RESTAURANT

For four decades locals and travelers alike have come to respect the exceptional dinner house in downtown Fort Bragg known as The Restaurant. Everything is made from scratch from farm fresh produce, locally caught fish, ranch meats and poultry. In this rich and homey atmosphere diners are treated like royalty over dishes of fresh wild fish, prime rib, lobster tail, Black Angus New York strip steak, pork loin chops and Bourride (a traditional Provencal seafood stew with rockfish, scallops and prawns in a light saffron-scented broth; served over crostini and aioli). Dungeness crabcakes, wilted spinach salad, New England clam chowder (delicious), grilled polenta and Asian noodle bowls are for lighter eaters. The desserts are fresh made and sumptuous from the "amazing carrot cake", classic Creme Brulee, chocolate silk truffle cake with pecan and walnut crust to the old fashioned hot fudge sundae with 3 scoops of housemade vanilla bean ice cream topped with warm chocolate fudge sauce, glazed pecans, real whipped cream and a cherry. Local Mendocino wines and microbrews and good cheer make For many Mendocino Coast residents The Restaurant is their "Big Night Out" on the town!

The ambience is more like dining in a historic restaurant in San Francisco at the turn of the century during the "Gold Rush". It feels good here - a safe and comfortable feeling which only the wisdom of time and experience can create. Owner Susan Larson and her late husband Jim have done well, weathered the storms and held a straight course for their friends and guests. Lots of memories here and a great staff. Susan's friend, Olaf Palm is a world famous artist whose paintings hang in the dining room. Rotating art shows in the extended dining room feature the works of local talented artists.
