A good pet and feed store, which is truly concerned about the welfare of our best friends, is vital to the success of your visit or stay to this both rural and wild part of California. Whether you travel with horses, llamas, dogs, cats or birds; Arff is great ongoing support for you. Julie and Max Werner moved here in 2005, bought the store in October 2006, and love helping their local clientele as well as visitors with premium lines of food, vitamins, supplements, accessories, toys, fencing, kennels and specialty needs for the healthy or handicapped pet or owner. They also have a self-service dog bath and groming by appointment. Especially sensitive to the needy, Julie (whose father was blind) and Max take handicapped children surfing - see www.rideawave.org Max and Julie live a match made in heaven; here by the sea in Gualala, in service to their community of life - which includes you and your domestic and wildlife friends.

SIDELIGHTS and THINGS TO DO: At the south entrance to Gualala is the Highway 1 bridge crossing over the Gualala River. Running parallel to the river is Gualala Road, which has beaches and redwood forests where you can run your dog - especially at the end (about 2 miles east from Highway 1) just before the historic "Green Bridge" and private property. You might see river otter, chipmonks scampering up giant redwoods, deer, herons, ducks, hawks and possibly even a bobcat or mountain lion (be careful just before sunrise and sunset) in this wilderness river valley. Anchor Bay beach (there is a access fee) is a good place to run your dog(s), but watch out for sneaker waves and the tides. Best to check with Max and Julie at ARFF for the latest and greatest. Also visit the Mendocino Book Download of Gualala at: North Sonoma - South Mendocino Coastline
